Actinic is a specialist UK provider of EPOS and ecommerce solutions for small and medium retailers. Founded in 1996, Actinic has supplied solutions for thousands of companies in the retail sector, both online and offline.
The Actinic EPOS hardware and software are designed by former retailers and give a comprehensive feature set that is straight forward to operate at great value prices.
The company also offers two ranges of ecommerce products for web designers and self-builders. These comprise both web-based and desktop store-building solutions.
The Web Designer range: Actinic Designer is a development tool for commercial web designers deploying multiple sites and allows seamless interaction with Dreamweaver. The site owners are supplied with Actinic Catalog Client or Business Client software to operate their stores which have the design features removed.
For those wanting to create their own store - Self-Builders - Actinic offers Actinic Express, an entry-level web-based shopping cart; Actinic Catalog, with everything a merchant requires to develop and manage their own online store, including capacity for growth; and Actinic Business, a more sophisticated application for higher volume sites and integration to Sage Line 50 and QuickBooks accounting systems. Users can obtain annual maintenance to any product via purchase of Actinic Cover.
Both EPOS and ecommerce lines are sold through channel partners including web designers, Internet Service Providers, web hosts and IT VARs.
Actinic, recognised as the UK ecommerce software market leader, is used on over 10,000 live sites. Research shows that over 50% of SMEs using packaged software to run their stores use Actinic (source: pfa Research). John Standen - Non-executive Group Chairman. John Standen joined the board in 2004. He is the chair or a director of a number of public and private companies, specialising in helping them to develop and achieve their strategies. The majority of his career was spent in investment banking, including as CEO of Barclays Corporate Finance. He is also Chairman of the Council of the University of Hull.
Chris Barling, chief executive officer, co-founded Actinic Software in 1996. He has some 30 years in the IT industry. Chris held senior positions in Reuters and Cable and Wireless and spent time on the board of GLS (the UK's largest educational supplier), prior to founding Actinic. Latterly he has written many articles on EPOS and ecommerce for titles such as Independent Retailer and .Net. In 2005 he co-authored "Selling Successfully Online" with Bruce Townsend, Actinic's marketing manager.
Phil Rothwell, managing director, joined Actinic in 1997 and has played a key role in the development of the company. Phil's career in IT has spanned more than 20 years and includes time working for major software companies like Autodesk. Phil is also a former editor of CAD User and Network Computing magazines. He has continued to write for key trade magazines and has been a regular conference speaker.
Nick Kington has worked for Actinic for more than 4 years. Nick has previously held senior positions with Sage, Cable & Wireless and Dell, prior to Actinic. Nick is the director of the business unit which supplies ecommerce, EPOS and MOTO solutions to sole traders and companies with less than ten employees.
